We want people with passion, drive and commitment. In exchange, you will get valuable, handson experience in a busy, FM radio environment.

What Our Young Volunteers Say

"Helped me find new confidence"

I was a bit nervous about doing the interview, but I really wanted the placement because it was in Bridgwater, an area I grew up in and love. I wanted to gain confidence in working with other people and get more involved with real work. Sedgemoor fm has helped me find new confidence and share ideas with people. As a result of this role I’ve become a much more confident writer, learned about Search Engine Optimization and enjoyed the support to work freely and creatively.  The role has been really interesting and fun, and I can’t wait to see what we do next.

"Learnt from a positive working environment"

Before I volunteered with the station I had anxiety about how well I performed and a fear of the unknown. At the time I was under a lot of pressure from my school to achieve and I also needed work experience. Working with the station I got to see a professional working in a positive working environment. It showed me you can be happy in a job and be passionate and teach other people in a fun and interesting way . Since volunteering I have gone on to work in hospitality, and use what I learnt from the time at the station to help others learn. I have also set up my own photography business, which is where my passion really lies.

"Opened my eyes to the depth of marketing planning"

I’ve always enjoyed the more creative subjects, like art, and the idea of a work placement needed to support that. I wanted to learn more about planning and what goes into the making of a product. Sedgemoor fm has opened my eyes to the depth of marketing and marketing planning and also encouraged me to create thumbnails and social media banners using my artistic ability. It’s been great to see the things we’ve been working on for months come to fruition and go out into the public domain and I’ve especially enjoyed helping to organise and deliver a radio show against a show format.

"A breath of fresh air"

I was at college and not sure about what to do next career-wise. I knew I wanted to do something creative and become more confident and develop self-trust. Sedgemoor fm gave me a unique opportunity and has been a breath of fresh air for me. I’ve interviewed the Mayor, local YouTubers and businesses, and had a hand in growing the social media channels. I was taught to use a process that harnesses my creative ability and I’ve found that I don’t need to know everything about everything and that I have support around me to help with the things I’m not so sure about. Best of all I helped to develop a new radio show about video gaming and became one of the show’s presenters.

"They looked at what would help me"

I was on a University Course and wanted to find somewhere I could get some experience of working in radio. I wanted to be able to go into radio in the future feeling confident. Sedgemoor fm have really looked after me well.  They didn’t just look at what I can do for them, they looked at what would help me and what I needed for my portfolio. I go to look behind the scenes in radio and feel I’ve gained important experience I can use going forward

"An invaluable experience"

I was looking for an opportunity to get experience in radio and production and Sedgemoor fm is a local radio station I’ve always listened. What I wanted was to get some practical experience that is beyond what I could have got in normal academic studies. Sedgemoor fm has helped me grow in confidence and develop skills. I’ve learned what a successful project looks like and got to interview people, as well as work in a professional environment. I believe that this invaluable experience will help me know how to react, and what working in the industry is really like.

"I'm now much clearer on my next steps"

I knew I wanted to work in sports journalism in some way, but didn’t know what that would look like or how to get started. I also wanted to become more confident with presenting. Sedgemoor FM have given me practical experience of match commentary and helped me develop confidence in my presenting skills. I’ve also met people I didn’t expect to, who have helped me. As a result, I’m now much clearer on my next steps and looking forward to the future.
