Visiting the incredible Cheddar Gorge, boasting awe-inspiring scenery, caves and hilltop walks with fantastic views. The Cheddar caves are also worth a look, with Gough’s cave specifically being hailed as one of the best of its kind in the UK. It’s 90 metres deep, over 2 kilometres long and containing the country’s largest underground river system.

One way to view this incredible scenery is via Jacob’s ladder, the tower of which offers some phenomenal views of both the village below and looks up towards Bristol and Bournemouth with a good view across the Somerset Levels. The Tower is currently closed, but you can still see spectacular views of Somerset and beyond, without climbing the tower.
The cheddar car boot sale is another good place to go to buy or sell wares. This popular car boot sales attracts people from far and wide and it’s incredibly popular over the summer.
The Strawberry Line is a trail across an old railway line that shared the same name. The trail is still in development, but as the line is completed in sections there is already much to enjoy from it.
The Cheddar Reservoir is great place for a flat circular walk. The walk is almost 2 miles with good views of the reservoir. On a summer evening, you can often observe spectacular sunsets.
Velvet bottom, a stunning walk through the Cheddar Complex, offering many picturesque views. Velvet bottom also has a rather unique feel under foot. You’ll notice how spongy the grass feels.
West Mendip Way is an amazing walk through the Area of outstanding natural beauty known as the Mendips – a walk where Cheddar just so happens to be the centre of!

Local & nearby Legends

Glastonbury is just 13 ½ miles from Cheddar, the Village known for its world-famous festival of the same name.

Cheddar is also close to the coast, with both Burham and Weston’s beaches being under 12 miles away each.

The smallest city in England, Wells, is also a short trip away – being under 10 miles and a 15 minute drive away! In the centre you’ll find the cathedral and the picturesque Princes Palace. The palace, along with the city, has been a film location for movies such as Elizabeth and Hot Fuzz.

There are also other cities nearby as well. Bath is 25 miles north east of Cheddar, offering the famous Roman Baths. Bristol is about 30 minutes North of Cheddar. It is home to SS Great Britain the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the Corn Exchange.

Taunton is also closeby, just 30 miles to the south.

Bristol, Bath and Taunton, of course, offer great shopping, but you should also not rule out Bridgwater, the home of Sedgemoor fm, which is just a 30 minute drive away from Cheddar.

Bridgwater offers retail parks and a town centre with numerous coffee shops, cafes and pubs. It’s also home to the Manchip, a delightful pastry that flies off the shelves wherever it is sold. If you want to try a manchip, visit Bridgwater before 10am… they go that quickly from the few locations that bake and sell them!
